Eyes and Hands
Inspired by the novel 1984, I portrayed the algorithm’s manipulative power over its users. Using Procreate and Illustrator, I aimed to create the feeling of fear by portraying the algorithm as a creature with gigantic eyes and hands, an overbearing surveillance system like Big Brother in 1984. The surveillance cameras, eyes, and game remote controls in the poster on the left reveal how algorithm watches what we buy, search, listen, watch, and post, while the repeated images of bubbles and chains represent how users are disconnected from each other and fed only with limited information provided by the algorithm.
By making a pair of posters a serial work, I amplified the strength of my message. The crowded layout of complicated shapes in a variety of intense colors without any negative spaces highlights the chaotic, suffocating nature of social media.
